Mamavation Monday 10/25

This post is going to be short and sweet.

This week was pretty good for me. My eating was pretty good except for dinner yesterday (we were celebrating my dad's birthday).

I'm not going to get bent out of shape over one less than perfectly healthy meal. One dinner isn't going to make me or break me :)

I've been considering joining a CSA this upcoming year and found one here where I can get produce, eggs, beef, and chicken for a little over $800 (for April-October). That comes out to about $30 a week. We definitely spend more than that on those items at the store every week. Right now I'm thinking "why would anyone NOT do this?"

If you've joined a CSA in the past, what did you like/dislike about it?

Here's my scale pic for the week:

I lost 2 lbs
! w00t!!

Thanks once again to Subway for sponsoring Mamavation this week! They're giving away a $50 gift card from Lulu Lemon, a green Gaiam gym bag and yoga mat

  1. I totally want to get in on a coop like that.. There's one in my area that I saw a post or an email about not too long ago. I keep meaning to look more into it, then I forgot. I'm going to talk to andy about it this week!

Congrats on the 2 lbs love! :)

  3. Congrats on the weight loss this week!

Re: joining the CSA. We joined one for the summer, but they just had produce. I loved it, and would love to find one that had eggs, meat, etc. I say go for it!

  4. Great job on the loss CJ. I have some CSA experience, I have belonged to ones in California, Florida, and Colorado. They are great in areas where you do not have many local options because they support that farm (or group of farms) and give you high quality products.

I loved my CSA in Florida because of the sub-tropical climate. A lot of the produce I got were varietals that originated from Asia and I learned a lot about foods that were new to me.

The big thing I love about CSAs is that they are like Christmas in that you get a box of goods every week and you have no idea what you are getting. You need to think fast once you have everything so it won't go bad in that week.

I did not do a CSA this year only because my farmers' market had 17 farms with great CSAs. We have wonderful farms in my area and I chose to "spread my wealth" among them. The benefit was that I did not have to deal with a farm's pre-determined share of food for me (a.k.a. way too many squash last month).

In areas that I have lived where local, organic produce was not super abundant the CSA was more critical for me. Where I live now not so much because I can support more farms with buying what I want in quantities I choose. I do subscribe to a raw milk dairy though where I own a share of a cow and get dairy products weekly with options to buy eggs, honey, wheat and meat at reduced rates. If you have any questions you can email me bodhibearinfo/gmail and if you are looking at CSA options go to localharvest.org

  5. I haven't looked into a CSA for my area (even though I KNOW we have to have them - I live in CA for goodness sake). I am off to google local CSA's! :P

btw - great job on the weight loss this week... keep working it! :)

And yes... don't be too hard on yoruself about a 'slip up' on the diet. If we were 'perfect' we wouldn't be on this journey, now would we? :P

    HUGS have a fantstic week!

  6. Wow on the 2 pounds, and I agree one meal if you have it isn't going to break you and might even just help!!

We were in a CSA one year and I'd love to do it again!! We got a ton of veggies, some we weren't sure what to do with, but it was cool. And it's even cooler if you can go to the farm and see the conditions etc. I say go for it!!

As for the CSA... had no idea what it was until this post... So I'll be really reading about this as I know it could definitely be a warm welcome to our family of 4!
